Ice cream shop loyalty card: stamps, winter closure and rewards
An ice cream shop loyalty card works when the rule says what earns a stamp, a cone, a cup or a takeaway tub, and what happens to stamps during the winter closure. With Iterum customers open the card from a QR code without an app, and staff record the visit in the counter app. Write down how long stamps stay valid before your first customer.
How an ice cream shop loyalty card works
An ice cream shop loyalty card records your regulars’ visits and, once they reach the target, entitles them to a reward chosen by the shop, usually a cone or a cup. With a digital card customers do not have to keep a paper card from one season to the next: they open the card on their phone from a QR code displayed next to the display cabinet, at the till or on a sticker on the takeaway tub.
In an ice cream shop the best moment to sign up is often the wait: people queuing at the counter have a few minutes to scan the QR code, whereas their hands are full once the cone arrives. Put the QR code where people queue, not only by the till.
You write the rule and your staff apply it. Iterum does not read the till, the card terminal or the receipt: an authorised person scans the card’s QR code or types its code in the counter app («Al banco») and confirms the visit, which stays recorded in the dashboard. Sign-up and stamping need a connection. If you also run as a café in summer, the loyalty card for cafés covers the morning counter routine.
Write the rule in one sentence
For example: «one stamp for every visit with at least one cone or cup, at the counter or to take away». It is an example to adapt, not a recommended rule.
Display the QR code where people queue
Next to the flavour cabinet, at the till and on takeaway tubs: customers sign up in the browser while they wait, with no app or password.
Stamp when you hand over the ice cream
At the till or the counter, once the customer has the cone in hand: staff scan the card and confirm the visit.
Record the reward
Once the target is reached, staff check the rule, hand over the reward and record the redemption in the dashboard.
Cone, cup or tub: what earns a stamp in an ice cream shop?
In an ice cream shop the same customer may spend a few euros on a small cone or much more on a one-kilo tub or an ice cream cake. An Iterum stamp card records visits confirmed by staff, not products: under the rule «one stamp per visit», the customer buying a cone and the customer buying a tub each receive one stamp.
If you want to reward bigger purchases differently, there are two routes. The first is to narrow the eligible visit, for example by leaving out cakes made to order or coffees. The second is a points card, which Iterum also offers: you decide how many points each product is worth and staff record them in the counter app, because Iterum does not calculate points from the receipt. The difference between the two mechanics is explained in the guide stamps vs points loyalty card.
| Purchase | Stamp card | Points card (example) | What to decide first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cone or cup | One stamp per visit | 1 point | Whether a cone with extra cream counts like the others |
| Large cone or cup, milkshake | One stamp per visit | 2 points | Whether milkshakes count or only ice cream |
| Takeaway tub | One stamp per visit, or excluded | 3 points per half kilo | Whether the stamp is given on collection or when ordering |
| Ice cream cake or semifreddo made to order | Often left out of the rule | Points decided case by case, or none | How to write it on the card so it is not debated on collection |
| Several cones in one purchase | One stamp per card shown | Points according to the products bought | Whether each family member can use their own card |
Winter closure: what happens to loyalty card stamps?
If your ice cream shop closes for a few months, the question comes up when you reopen: are stamps collected in September still valid in April? The answer must be written in the card’s conditions before the first stamp, because a customer two boxes away from the reward who finds the card has expired is unlikely to come back happily.
The simplest choice to explain is a validity period that outlasts the closure, for example 12 months from the first stamp: someone who starts the card at the end of the season completes it the following spring. A card that expires at the end of the season only works if the target is short and the reward can be reached in a few weeks. With a digital card the stamps stay on the customer’s phone through the winter, whereas a paper card risks staying in a drawer.
When you reopen you can remind your regulars about the card: Iterum lets you send messages only to customers who have given consent, within the limits of the chosen plan. Keep them for announcing the reopening or a new flavour, not for frequent messages.
| Rule | Benefit | Risk | How to write it on the card |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 months from the first stamp | Outlasts the winter closure; easy to explain | Some rewards arrive in the following season | «Stamps valid for 12 months from the first stamp, including after the winter closure» |
| Until the end of the season | Every season starts from zero | Customers close to the reward in October lose their stamps | «Stamps valid until the end-of-season closure»: only with short targets |
| Until reopening plus a few weeks | Gives people time to return after the break | Needs clear communication when you reopen | «Stamps valid until 31 May of the following year» |
| No expiry | No debates at the counter | Rewards claimed years later, after prices have changed | Better to state a duration anyway |
One card per person or one per family?
In an ice cream shop a parent often pays for four cones at once. If the rule is «one stamp per card shown», each person with their own card gets a stamp; if you prefer one card per family, the family receives one stamp per visit and reaches the reward at the same pace as a single customer. Both are legitimate choices, as long as they are written down.
Children often do not have a phone: in that case the parent shows the card. For tourists passing through, who will come only once, the card matters little: inviting people to sign up makes most sense for those who live or work nearby. There is no need to offer it to everyone in the Saturday evening queue; it is enough that the QR code is visible and that staff can explain the card in one sentence.
How many stamps should a seasonal ice cream shop ask for?
The target on an ice cream shop loyalty card should be chosen with the season in mind, not only visit frequency. In a hypothetical 30-week season, a customer who comes once a week with a 10-stamp card earns two rewards; with a 6-stamp card, four. A customer who comes every two weeks, with 12 stamps, reaches the reward only after about 24 weeks: almost the whole season.
Also write down the exact reward wording: «after ten stamps, a free cone» means ten cones paid for and the eleventh free, about 9.1% of the value of eleven cones at the same price. The reward cost calculator redoes the sum with your prices and costs; to choose the target with the same method in any sector, read how to create a loyalty card.
| Stamps before the reward | Customer twice a week | Weekly customer | Customer every 2 weeks | Rewards in 30 weeks (weekly customer) | Share given back |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | about 3 weeks | about 6 weeks | about 12 weeks | 4 | about 14.3% (1 in 7) |
| 8 | about 4 weeks | about 8 weeks | about 16 weeks | 3 | about 11.1% (1 in 9) |
| 10 | about 5 weeks | about 10 weeks | about 20 weeks | 2 | about 9.1% (1 in 11) |
| 12 | about 6 weeks | about 12 weeks | about 24 weeks | 2 | about 7.7% (1 in 13) |
Which reward should an ice cream shop give its customers?
The simplest reward on an ice cream shop loyalty card is a cone or cup in your best-selling size, worded precisely: «a medium cup, any flavours, cream not included» leaves no doubt, whereas «a free ice cream» opens a debate about sizes, special flavours and tubs. A low-cost reward that people love is an early taste of a new flavour, offered when staff have time.
Also decide where and when the reward applies: you can exclude the busiest evenings or cakes made to order, as long as it is written on the card before the customer joins. More ideas, and the cost of each reward, are in the guide to loyalty card reward ideas; if you are thinking of a gift other than ice cream, first read the loyalty card rules in Italy.
| Reward | Cost to the shop | Suits you when | What to write on the card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cone or cup | Low: the cost of the ice cream and the cone | The target is short and customers come often | Size, number of flavours and whether cream is included |
| An extra flavour or cream on the cone | Very low | You want a frequent reward that takes seconds to serve | That the reward comes with a paid ice cream |
| Small takeaway tub | Medium | The target is long or the customer often buys to take away | Tub weight and whether it also applies to cakes |
| Early taste of the new flavour | Low, mostly staff time | You have curious customers and a range that changes often | When it can be redeemed and for how many people |
| A cone for the accompanying child | Like a small cone | Many customers come as a family | That the free cone applies on the same visit as the cardholder |
Paper card or digital loyalty card in an ice cream shop?
A paper stamp card remains the cheapest option for an ice cream shop and works without a connection; a digital loyalty card does not get lost during the winter closure and keeps track of stamps and rewards in the dashboard. The two can run side by side: keep the paper card for customers who do not use a smartphone and set a rule so that the same visit never earns two rewards.
With a digital card the takeaway tub becomes a way to sign up: a sticker with the QR code on the lid takes the customer to the card, and the stamp comes on the next visit. The full comparison, with the costs and limits of both, is in the guide paper or digital loyalty card; what each format costs is explained in how much does a loyalty card cost.
How to set up your ice cream shop loyalty card with Iterum
With Iterum you prepare your ice cream shop’s card before paying: in the card designer you choose the design and the number of stamps and describe the reward in your own words, then see a preview. You can start from the ice cream shop demo design, which uses made-up data: it is not a real customer or a result.
Customers open the card from the QR code or a link and, by adding the card, accept the card Terms and confirm they have read the privacy notice, with no box to tick; they do not need to install an app or create a password; on supported devices they can add it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, otherwise the card stays available from the link. Authorised staff use the counter app on a phone or computer, scan the card’s QR code or type its code and confirm the visit. Iterum does not read the card terminal and does not stamp offline.
To activate the service there is a 7-day free trial: you pay €0 today, a payment card is required and, unless you cancel, the selected plan continues after the trial. The full process is described in how Iterum works.
Sources and method
This page gives no average ice cream prices: on 11 October 2026 we checked the monthly price survey archive of the Osservatorio Prezzi e Tariffe, Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) for Rome, August 2026, and among the services and other foods surveyed there is no item for artisan ice cream.
Targets, timings, rewards per season and shares given back are hypothetical calculations with one ice cream at the same price per visit and a 30-week season chosen as an example, not data collected from real ice cream shops. The information about Iterum describes the product as of 11 October 2026, as shown on its public pages, and does not promise more visits or more sales.
Frequently asked questions
- How do ice cream shop customers get the loyalty card?
- They scan the QR code displayed next to the cabinet, at the till or on a tub sticker, or open a link. By adding the card they accept the card Terms and confirm they have read the privacy notice, with no box to tick, and see it in their browser, with no app, account or password.
- Are stamps still valid after the winter closure?
- That depends on the rule you write on the card before the first stamp. Validity of 12 months from the first stamp outlasts the closure and is the easiest to explain; a card that expires at the end of the season only works with short targets.
- Can I give more stamps for a tub or an ice cream cake?
- A stamp card records one visit confirmed by staff. If you want to reward big purchases more, Iterum also offers points cards: you decide what each product is worth and staff record the points, because Iterum does not read the receipt.
- Can a family share one card?
- Yes, if your rule allows it: one card per family receives one stamp per visit. Alternatively each person uses their own card and gets a stamp when they show it. Choose one of the two and write it down.
- How much does it cost to try Iterum in an ice cream shop?
- The trial lasts 7 days and you pay €0 today; a payment card is required to activate it. The price of the selected plan is shown before you confirm, and the plan continues after the trial unless you cancel.
