Black Friday ideas for small businesses: reward regulars without giving margin away

Black Friday ideas for small businesses start with the date: Friday 27 November 2026, with Cyber Monday on 30 November. For a small business the safest idea is to reward people who come back, with extra stamps, a package or early access for card holders, rather than a discount for everyone. If you advertise a price cut in Italy, quote the lowest price of the previous thirty days.

When is Black Friday 2026, and what should a small business do?

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November. Black Friday is the day after American Thanksgiving, which US federal law sets on the fourth Thursday of November, here the 26th; Cyber Monday is, by convention, the Monday after.

Nothing obliges a small business to join in, but customers expect an offer that week. The real work is deciding beforehand what to offer, to whom and for how long, without copying the discount of a business with bigger margins and a bigger stockroom.

The ideas in this guide start from one principle: rewarding people who have already come back costs less than giving margin away to someone who buys once and is never seen again. You get the decision first, then the arithmetic, the ideas, the Italian rules on announced discounts, the messages and the check on results.

Is Black Friday worth it for a small business? It depends on the trade

Joining Black Friday is not always a good idea. The table is our own reasoning, not market data: it shows what tends to work in each trade and where the risk sits.

The practical rule is a single one: do Black Friday only if the offer gives someone a reason to come back after 27 November. If it only brings one more sale at a reduced price, skip it.

Black Friday by type of business: what tends to work, the risk and the alternative (our own reasoning, not market data)

Café or barA reason to return, such as extra stamps on breakfast for card holdersA discount on coffee cuts an already small margin and attracts people passing onceA treat to collect in December, only for card holders
Hairdresser and beauty salonA treatment package or a December appointment for regularsFilling December with reduced prices and leaving no room for the people who always comeA prepaid package or an early look for existing card holders
ShopEarly access for card holders, or extra points above a minimum spendAn advertised price cut has rules on the previous price, and the margin thinsA small gift with purchase, without touching the price

Discount or reward: a margin example with hypothetical numbers

To see what a discount for everyone costs, take a hypothetical example, not data from a real business: an average basket of 30 euros, a product cost of 18 euros (prices before VAT) and therefore a margin of 12 euros. A 20% discount takes 6 euros off every basket: the price falls to 24 euros and the margin to 6, half.

To earn the same 12 euros you now need two baskets instead of one, double the sales. One extra stamp on a 10-stamp card, with a reward that costs you 3 euros, costs 0.30 euros (3 divided by 10): twenty times less than the 6 euros of the discount. That cost is only paid for customers who complete the card and come back.

  • A stamp does not bring new customers by itself: it rewards the ones you have. If you need new customers, the channel is another one, such as word of mouth.
  • A discount can make sense to clear stock that weighs on you: there the margin you lose is already decided. You can work out the reward cost with your own numbers in the reward cost calculator.
Hypothetical example: a 20% discount against one extra stamp (invented numbers, replace with your own)

Announced discounts: the rules in Italy, from the Consumer Code to Lazio

This section describes Italian rules, for businesses trading in Italy. If you announce a price cut, article 17-bis of the Italian Consumer Code (Legislative Decree 206/2005), inserted by Legislative Decree 26/2023, says in paragraph 2 (our translation): «Previous price means the lowest price applied by the trader to consumers generally in the thirty days before the price reduction.» Paragraph 1 requires every price-reduction announcement to state that previous price.

For a cut announced on 27 November the thirty days run from 28 October to 26 November. Raising the price before Black Friday to then «discount» it does not help: what counts is the lowest price applied in that period. If the reduction deepens within the same campaign, paragraph 5 takes the price before the first reduction as the reference.

As for scope, as written: the article speaks of the «trader» and of every price-reduction announcement, and the text we read does not limit it to goods. Perishable agricultural and food products of Legislative Decree 198/2021 are outside it (paragraph 3), as are sales below cost (paragraph 6); for products on the market for less than thirty days you must state the period the previous price refers to (paragraph 4). A breach carries an administrative fine (paragraph 7); we give no amounts. For a service or fresh products, check with your town council (Comune) or the Chamber of Commerce (Camera di commercio) how it applies to you.

Stamps and points do not change the displayed price, but if your message says «discount» or «-20%» the rule applies.

In Lazio, where Rome sits, article 34 of regional law 22/2019 (the Commerce Code) covers end-of-season and promotional sales. The regional government says in resolution no. 379 of 31 May 2022 (our translation) that «the ban on promotional sales in the 30 days before the start date of the sales remains in place», and summarises paragraph 6 as a ban on inviting customers, by any means, to favourable terms before the sales begin.

That resolution concerns the 2022 summer sales. The government sets the sale dates every year (paragraph 2) and today we have not found the one for winter 2027: for a December promotion count thirty days back from the official date, and if you sell end-of-season goods, check with your town council (Comune) or the Chamber of Commerce (Camera di commercio) before writing to customers. This section is not legal advice.

If a gift depends on a purchase it can become a prize promotion: the rules are in the guide to the loyalty card rules in Italy.

Telling your customers: 3 messages before, on the day and after Black Friday

Three messages are enough: one before, one on the day, one after. The texts in the table are our own writing for an invented venue, are under 140 characters and need adapting to your offer.

Write only to customers who agreed to commercial messages. In Italy the Data Protection Authority’s guidelines of 4 July 2013 say it is not lawful to ask for consent «with that first promotional message» (our translation), and that the same rules apply to WhatsApp and similar tools: Black Friday is not the moment to collect consent. Article 130 of the Italian privacy code has a limited exception for email only.

  • The limit is monthly and per location: 2 messages on Base, 4 on Pro, 8 on Premium, counted in the month they are sent. On Base, the two in November are the before and the day; the third, sent in December, counts in the next month.
  • A message can be scheduled from 10 minutes ahead to the end of the following month, and nothing is sent between 9pm and 9am, so write in good time.

After Black Friday: did it bring people back? Measuring December returns

Black Friday worked if in December you see people you had not seen, not if you took more on 27 November. Note your return rate beforehand, say on 26 November; look at it again between 20 December and early January and compare the two figures.

In Iterum, in Results, the return rate compares customers with more than one visit against those active in the period (over 7, 30 or 90 days): it does not isolate Black Friday by itself, so you write down the starting date. How to read the number is explained in the guide to the customer retention rate.

Customers who came only on 27 November and have not been back in December can be contacted calmly in January: ideas for bringing them back are in the guide to winning back lost customers.

What Iterum (by FIDUS) does and does not do on Black Friday

Iterum (by FIDUS) is the digital loyalty card in the phone’s Wallet: it is there to reward people who return, not to run a price offer. For Black Friday, here is what it does and what it does not.

  • Does: stamps or points given by staff, several in one visit if you decide so; prepaid packages from the Pro plan; manual messages on the Wallet card to customers who switched offers on; «Bring a friend» on every plan; Results to measure returns.
  • Does not: coupons, automatic «double points» days, price discounts, an online shop or payments. Staff apply the multiplier, and you set the price.
  • If you want the card ready before 27 November, starting the 7-day trial in the first half of the month leaves time to set up card and stamps. Activating it needs a payment card, and the chosen plan continues after the 7 days unless you cancel.

Frequently asked questions

When is Black Friday 2026?
Friday 27 November 2026; Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. Black Friday is the day after American Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday of November, the 26th in 2026.
Is Black Friday worth it for a small business?
It is if the offer gives customers a reason to return after 27 November, such as extra stamps or early access for card holders. In the guide’s hypothetical example a 20% discount halves the margin, from 12 to 6 euros a basket.
What must I say when I announce a discount in Italy?
The previous price, meaning the lowest price applied to consumers in the thirty days before the cut (article 17-bis of the Italian Consumer Code). For services or fresh products, check with the local council or Chamber of Commerce how it applies.
Can a café or a beauty salon do Black Friday?
Yes, it is a commercial choice and we found no ban. In a café a discount weighs on a small margin, so extra stamps often suit better. In a beauty salon a package or a December appointment tends to work better.
Is a discount or double points better?
It depends on your margin and your aim: double points reward people who already buy and only cost you when the card is completed. Iterum has no automatic multiplier: staff give the extra stamps or points at the visit.
Does Iterum run coupons or double-points days automatically?
No: Iterum has no coupons, no automatic double-points days, no price discounts and no online shop. It has stamps and points given by staff, prepaid packages from Pro, manual messages on the Wallet card and «Bring a friend».
